I’ve been experimenting with a similar technique to my previous post that adds variance of colour.

The outline of each circle appears to resemble shadow on a matte surface, creating a pebble-like effect.

Subtle colours produce pebble-like volumes, whereas vibrant colours seem to give the volume an unsettling-but-comforting almost florescent appearance, resembling the coat of some kind of insect.

With a lower sampling rate, as with the second image, circles are drawn more distant from each other and the shadow/florescent effect is reduced.

If the image is rendered mid-way through the circles’ orbits, they appear to contradict the soft surface. Without seeing the movement of the circles, they appear disassociated on the volumes. But when zooming in, the circles seem much closer to the volumes.

Next time I’d like to revisit the more subtle colours of the first image and experiment with other radial shapes of volume.
