After yesterday I fancied working a bit more on exploring some creative coding. This time I wanted to see if I could replicate something that I’ve seen done by one of my favourite generative artists, @dmitricherniak.

"Self-portrait 👁👄👁 “

My work-in-progress after an evening can be seen below. To achieve this, I simulated an electromagnetic field generated by the coloured circles. Each point on a fine grid is given a field intensity in both horizontal and vertical directions, which can then be used to trace the paths of hypothetical charged particles moving through the field. These paths are then drawn as black lines.

I chose to give each circle 10 particles starting at a random angle at regular intervals extending along each circle’s radius.

I’m not convinced that this is how Dmitri achieved his piece. One thing to notice is that in his piece, the lines rarely cross. They do sometimes but generally they keep a minimum distance. Whereas in my version, lines are often are squeezed together, just as they would be in a real electromagnetic field.

It’s possible that Dmitri’s lines are initially chosen randomly but then optimised in a later stage to minimise the amount of line cross-over or maximise the distance between points on lines in close proximity.

At any rate, I feel quite inspired in trying to reverse engineer this piece and I will definitely be using the electromagnetic field in future pieces.
